Hey, thanks! :D

Where da pixels at bitch
Hey Gemini, I've said before how much I admire your work and how I think you have an exceptional color palette, something that I would really like to ask you abut.
My palettes were never really "artistic"so to speak, I was always direct when I chose colors for my character sprites. So I really I just want to ask you how you do it. How do you choose your color palette?
Hey there! I'm afraid I can't be of much help on this subject since it's mostly based on intuition and experience.
My process of choosing colors is mostly iterative, I'll usually "guess" a few colors, and slowly tweak them as the piece develops, until I'm satisfied.

I believe focusing on certain feelings/imagery you'd like to express really helps. For example, on this piece geminimax.deviantart.com/art/E…, I focused on the feelings of loneliness and desolation, so the palette consists mostly of colors with very low saturations and dark blues(I think it's pretty obvious that I love the blue color).

I can go a little more in depth about my colors choices in certain pieces if you want, but like I said, it's a very subjective thing. Don't be afraid to experiment with different/bizarre palettes!
Although I was afraid I would get "intuition" as an answer, thank you very muchfor taking the time to answer. I have been experimenting, and using references to inspire different palettes (mostly your work actually) and while I'm not quite there yet, I would say it's slowly going there.

My main issue lies in the shades rather than the base colors.
In many different pixel artworks, I would see for example the artist using dark purple as a shade to a blue base, and it's funny that in the link you sent me, you're doing that exact same thing. And it boggles me sometimes, to how it all turns out to be a great fluid palette and not showing blobs of randomly mixed colors, which is what I sometimes end up with whenever I try mixing it up.

Here's a sprite for an original character imgur.com/ywePVrm I'm working on,  you could see the palette on the side and it's slightly different from what I usually use for a character. Like you said, I actually have a certain feeling/imagery in mind, and it's some kind of bright fantasy. I'd love to hear your thoughts, thanks again !
